Summer is a busy time of the year with rushing kids around to sports, family vacations, family parties and warm weather activities. Meal planning has a lot of advantages and can relieve the stress of deciding what to make for lunch and dinner everyday. Planning meals ahead of time and working with a few ingredients or one main ingredients such as bacon and fresh vegetables is a convenient way to get prepared.
Meal planning is an easy way to save money by using ingredients that you may already have or using extra ingredients you use during the week. It also is a great way to save time during a busy week
To get started, select a few ingredients you want to use for the week. For this meal plan, I’ve selected Wright® Brand Bacon as my main ingredient. I got this thick, bold bacon from Walmart® where it’s a great value. Other ingredients I’ll be using a lot of throughout the week for a few recipes include bacon, lettuce, potatoes, cheese and pasta. I’ve prepared a menu plan that uses these ingredients in different ways to increase variety while saving both time and money. Here are some things to think about as far as food groups and ingredients to include.
Vegetable Group: Carrots, potatoes, celery, bell peppers, tomato, spinach, lettuce, avocado, asparagus
Fruit Group: Strawberries, apple, grapes, bananas, pineapple, blueberries, lemons
Dairy: Milk, cheese, eggs, creams
Starches: Pasta, bread, rice, cereal
Meat Group: Bacon, chicken, beef, pork, fish
Picking just a few ingredients from a list of food groups allows for consistency and efficiency. Leftover fruits and vegetables from previous recipes can be used in other recipes throughout the week. This type of meal planning ensures that nothing goes to waste. Sticking with this plan means that fruit and vegetables won’t be left unused week after week.
