Many restaurants and wing sauce brands offer buffalo wings in mild, medium, hot, and exceptionally hot. That’s because buffalo-style wings are one of the most popular sauce flavors of chicken wings. How do I cut chicken wings?
You just found chicken wing recipe on Pinterest and it looks good. Now, you want to make it at home and the recipe doesn’t sound hard but you’re really unsure how to separate chicken wings? Once you learn how to cut chicken wings with these three easy steps, you’re set to go, like forever.
Chicken wings need to be cut at two joints which will result in three pieces: the drumette, the wingette, and the tip. The hard tip gets discarded while both the wing and drum are used in recipes because of their great source of meat.
- Find the two joints by using your fingers. The chicken wings will be cut and separated into three pieces.
- Use a sharp knife or pair of kitchen shears to cut through the center of each joint, leaving you with three parts: the Drumette, the Wingette, and the tip.
- Use the drumettes and wingettes in your recipe. Discard the small, boney wingtip.
- Trim some of the fat off with kitchen shears if desired.

Best Flavoring Tips for Chicken Wings
- Seasoning adds an extra layer of flavor that locks into the meat while cooking. Adding salt, pepper, onion, garlic, paprika powders to fresh chicken adds additional flavor to this buffalo-style chicken wings recipe.
- Wing Sauce I like Frank’s Red Hot Buffalo Wing Sauce or Moore’s Buffalo Wing Sauce. Find wing sauce next to the salad and barbecue dressings. Traditionally, melted butter is combined with buffalo sauce. This helps the sauce to stick to the skin.
- Fat Trimming some of the excess fat off by removing some of the skin can cut down on broiling time and calories. I like to do this when I separate the wings.
- Pairings that are traditionally served with chicken wings include celery and carrots. This helps to clear the palate.
- Dipping Sauce is different from wing sauce. Dipping sauce serves as a complement to your flavored wing recipe. My Instant Pot Buffalo Chicken Wings taste even better with blue cheese dressing, ranch dressing, or honey.
